FACTS ABOUT ANCIENT INDIA CALLED BHARAT

Vedic Astrology is the Traditional Astrology of India or Bharat and is some 4000 to 5000 years old. It is a living tradtion. India was once the richest empire on earth, at about 3000 BC, with cities more technologically advanced than most of the Europian Countries till the time of Renaissance. The early Vedic sages invented the Number System, the Decimal System, Algebra, Trignometry, Calculus, and the Value of Pi.
Albert Einstein said " We owe a lot to Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made."
In recent History the creator of the Pentiam chip was Vinod Dham, The Co founder of Sun Microsystems was Vinod Khosla, the creator of the Hotmail Email System was Sabhir Bhatia, and the GM of Hewlett Packard is Rajiv Gupta- allfrom India.
Mark Twaine said " India is the cradle of the Human Race, the birth place of Human Speach, the Mother of History, the Grand mother of Legend and the Great grand mother of Tradition."
Will Durant, the Pulitzer winning historian, said " It is true that, even across the Himalayan barrier, India has sent to the West such gifts as Grammer and Logic, [Panini] , Philosophy [Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishna] , and fables ,[Panchatantram] , Hypnotism ,and Chess, [Chadarangam], and above all Numerals and Decimal system." [Italycs are mine.]
By knowing some of these facts and quptes from Famous people you realise that India is not just a country of slouches, India has an illustrious post which can be seen by the living traditions that still exist in Vedic Astrology, Ayurvedic, Medicene, Vastu [Archtecture], Sanskrit, Music, Dance [Nritya], Yoga, Systems of Worships etc.

BEHAVIOUR OF PLANETS

Each Planet has its own basic charecteristics, regardless of which sign it is placed, or which House itis placed. The planet blends it's charecteristics with that of the Sign it occupies, and the House it occupies from the Lagna. If some other Planet Aspects this Planet, then again its expression further changes. As an anology I will explain for the easy grasping of the subject by begeners. Suppose you take a glass of Milk. It has got it's own charecteristic taste. If you add Sugar the taste changes, and you can feel more tastier. [like a benefic House]. Instead if you add salt, you may not like it. [Like a malefic House] If you add cofee the taste will be something else. If you add Bournvita You can have a seperate taste. Like that the planets also change their charecteristics according to the House they are located, the zodiac sign they are in, and give the results accorgingly. For example the Jupiter the most natural Benefic planet also can give adverse effects when it is located in Trikas [3rd,6th,8th and also 12th House from the Lagna.] and in the House of enemy, or in Debilitation Sign. Here Lagna I mean also include Chandra Lagna, Aruda Lagna, Karakmsa Lagna etc. Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars are called Personal Planets or Charectorbulding Planets. Jupiter, and Saturn are called ImpersoUranus Nepenal or Event Planets. Western Astrology also include Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto under this catogery.

MEDICAL ASTROLOGY

Medical Astrology is the science that analyzes how these imbalances can manifest in our physical body. When the natal chart is studied in light of present or future planetary movements (transits), Medical Astrology also provides insight into the timing of events and may give us clues as to when problems may begin, or fade off.

Very few people know that Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, and the one that medical doctors take an oath from, said that no one should call himself a doctor unless he/she was also an a astrologer; for no diagnosis could be made without the help of astrological information on the patient.

Can planets influence people ?

An analogy is like looking at a colour traffic light system and decoding what each of the colour light such as red , yellow and green are meaning and saying, like if some one goes when the red light is shining he or she is highly prone to be met with an accident or when green light is shining it is highly probable that he or she will have a safe passage.

If you ask me whether there is an effect from that red colour lights on a person's life my answer is both "yes" and "no". No, because it is just a light. Yes, because it indicates a bad period to cross. But if you attribute a godly character to the traffic light pole and starts worshipping it or think that there is a mystery in it. Then it is the lack of true knowledge and understanding. That is why, about 2500 years ago Lord Buddha said "Kim Karrisatthi Taraka ?" What stars can do ? It is not stars doing any thing to you. It will guide you to predict how your own actions and the reactions of past actions (Karmas) are shaping your destiny. Your true savior is none but yourself as it is your duty to steer your life on the correct path.

Stars only indicate your past "Karmas"( or the actions ) and depending on the past actions, the direction of the path of life you are going to take while in the journey, towards the ultimate goal. . It is as same as, depending on the lane you have stopped, the direction you should turn will be indicated by a traffic signal.

What is Astrology ?

Planets in the solar system are like an accurate clock in the sky. Their revolutions and movements are very precise. Planets rise and set at definite times. Effects of certain planetary influences are plainly visible such as day and night, change of seasons and tidal effects. It surely have influence on everyday life of all of us. But subtle effects on people are not so clearly evident at a glance.

Astrology is a system of observations gathered through ages. For an example Vedic Astrology was founded by Sage Parasara thousands of years ago and the observations collected through ages are the essence of the Hindu Astrology. Astrology, both Eastern and Western are based on a predictive system very similar to the one used by meteorology. Instead of forecasting the weather conditions, Astrological predictive system indicates such and such things are highly probable to happen to the people when such and such planetary positions are prevailing.

Astrology - from past to present

Astrology is a heritage of all of us, which stood the test of time. If astrology was absolute rubbish, then it would have gone out of circulation many hundreds or perhaps thousands years ago. Since there was some substance in astrology, which had proved to many people for generations about it's usefulness. Astrology had managed to survive through those generations. Now the time had come for the Astrology to engage in the test of time once again. This time a test carried out by a new breed of seekers living in the era of information age, who are armed with new technology, new ways of thinking and interested in investigating finding and presenting the knowledge of the past in a manner applicable to the present. If anybody wish to learn Vedic Astrology, here is a good place to start.

Become Your Own Therapist Using Your Chart

Our astrological chart is a window into our destiny, our soul and our psyche. Knowledge of the fundamentals in your chart provides a foundation on which a spiritual and psychological practice can be based.

All astrological data, including planets, elements, aspects and houses, illuminate where we can draw on our strengths and where we sabotage ourselves. Each chart also contains its own medicine which is the antidote to the weaknesses and wounds it reveals. With greater knowledge of our charts from this perspective we can become our own healers and be more honest and open with any Astrologer we consult.

I will discuss how I use Astrology to frame an initial meaning and determine the approach that will be most effective for that person. We will analyze several charts in detail to understand the impact of our early life, our experiences and our own personality traits on our behavior. While karma and past life experiences are clearly visible in each chart and do inform the underlying meaning of both our gifts and our wounds, it is helpful to learn strategies that enable us to act differently and consciously in our daily lives.

THE PLANETS

THE PLANETS:

Each planet has its own basic characteristics, regardless of which house or sign it appears in. Each planet's expression blends with and is influenced by the action of the sign and house it occupies. The aspect a planet makes to other planets will also modify its expression.

The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are called 'personal planets', or 'character building' planets.

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are called 'impersonal planets' or 'event planets'.

THE SUN
Keyword: Inner Self

The Sun rules the sign Leo and the fifth house. It represents your ego and the expression of your individuality. It also shows by house and sign placement your ambitions, deepest charecter traits and personal fulfillment.

In a natal chart, the Sun represents those who have a great influence in your life; i.e., a boss, supervisor, the government and men in general. In a males chart, The Sun represents the father and in a females chart, it represents the husband.

The Sun travels about 53 seconds per day and spends approximately 30 days in each sign.

Positive Sun Traits: Ambition, confidence, strong will power, strength, loyalty and a desire for recognition.

Negative Sun Traits: Arrogance, jealousy, laziness, conceit.

THE MOON
Keyword: Emotions

The Moon rules the sign Cancer and the fourth house. It represents your needs and desires, habits, instincts and the subconscious mind. The Moon also shows by house and sign placement, how you respond emotionally to others, situations and experiences, as well as how the public will react to you.

The Moon represents the mother, babies and the home enviornment. It also shows how well you get along with women regardless of your gender.

The Moon goes through all twelve signs about every 28 days. It spends approximately 2 1/2 days in each sign.

Positive Moon Traits: Inspiration, Flexibilty, domestic, nurturing, magnetism, fertility.

Negative Moon Traits: Self destructive, moodiness, smothering, dreaminess.

Mercury
Keyword: Reasoning Powers

Mercury rules Gemini, Virgo and the third and sixth houses. Mercury represents the way a person thinks and communicates. Mercury's house and sign placement will show how the mind directs its thoughts, ideas and opinions.. It is the conscious or reasonig mind.

When Mercury is in aspect with another planet, it will give additional information about how a person thinks. For example, if Mercury is aspected with the planet Mars, it will show a person who will most likely act upon their thoughts and ideas. If it aspected to Saturn, it would show a serious thinker, one who is cautious in communicating their thoughts.

Mercury also shows how an individual goes from one place to another (slowly, quickly, weakly, strongly etc.) depending on the sign placement. It also deals with day-to-day activities and siblings.

It takes Mercury approximately one year to go through all of the twelve signs. Mercury can stay in one sign from about 14 to 30 days, depending on its motion.

Positive Mercury Traits: Ability to learn quickly, resourcefulness, awareness, dexteriy, intelligent.

Negative Mercury Traits: Indecisiveness, instability, gullable, talks too much, two-faced, nosy.

VENUS
Keyword: Affection

Venus rules Taurus and Libra, the second and seventh houses. Venus rules social attitudes and behavior, as well as values, priorities, an individual's judgement and moral tendencies. Venus' house position in the natal chart shows where good luck can appear (in a minor way), where money may be gained or spent, and where you will want to relate to others. In a male's chart, Venus will indicate the kind of woman he may be attracted to. It is the planet of marriage and partnerships.

Venus travels from 0 to 1 degree, 16 minutes a day, depending on its motion, and stays in a sign approximately 23 days to a little over 2 months.

Positive Venus Traits: Charm, appreciation,of beutiful things, creativity, considerate, social.

Negative Venus Traits: Vanity, laziness, self-indulgent, indecisive, possesive, jealousy.

EARTH (PART OF FORTUNE)
Keyword: Reality

Earth represents the physical plane and mundane matters. The Earth is always the exact opposite of the Sun sign, degree and house placement. In the natal chart, Earth describes the area in which a person will be the most successful and one's own approach. It shows the individual's mission in life.

MARS
Keyword: Energy

Mars rules Aries and the first house. Mars represents action and energy. It's house position in the natal chart willshow where one is most likely to take risks, physical activities and the kind of things that one will put a lot of effort into. In a male's chart, Mars will indicate the sexual potency and drive. In a female's chart, Mars will describe the kind of man she would be physically attracted to.

Mars travels from 0 to one degree, 16 minutes per day depending on its motion, and takes about 2 years to go through all 12 signs, staying in one sign for about 1.5 months.

Positive Mars Traits: Courage, determination, independent, energetic, self reliant.

Negative Mars Traits: Impulsive, stubborn, violent, cruel, destructive.

JUPITER
Keyword: Expansion
Jupiter rules the sign Sagittarius and the ninth house. Jupiter is the planet of expansion and where it is located in the natal chart, will show an abundance in the individual's life. It also describes the potential for growth be it physical, intellectual, spiritual or cultural. It also describes one's capacity for enjoyment, optimism and the development of aspirations.

In a female's chart, Jupiter represents the father. Jupiter is sometimes called the greater benefactor because it is associated with good fortune in major ways and more often a benefit in a chart than it is a detriment.

It takes Jupiter about 12 years to go through the 12 signs, staying in one sign an average of one year. Jupiter travels from 0 to 14 minutes a day depending on whether it is retrograde or in direct motion.

Positive Jupiter Traits: Success, ambition, inspiration, wealth, optimism, generous, aspiring.

Negative Jupiter Traits: extravagance, pomposity, conceit, very lazy, overconfident, fanatical.

SATURN
Keyword: The Teacher

Saturn rules the sign Capricorn and the 10th house. Saturn is the 'teacher' planet and through its influences we learn. Sometimes this can be a difficult process. But remember, the planets represent circumstances or options. The individual makes the choices. Saturn's house placement shows the area of a person's life where that person has the most lessons to learn and where that person mat have the greatest feelings of inadequacy, resposibilities and limitations. Saturn's action is slow and enduring.

Saturn travels from 0 to 8 minutes per day depending on its motion and takes approximately 29 1/2 years to go through all twelve signs, staying in one sign for about 2 1/2 years.

Positive Saturn Traits: Stability, self- discipline, patience, endurance, humility, thriftiness, conventional.

Negative Saturn Traits: Misery, narrow-minded, selfish, fearful, pessimistic, rigid.

THE NODES OF THE MOON

The nodes of the moon are not planets; they are calculated points in space based on the Moon's position. There is a North Node and a South Node which are always in opposition to each other. Traditionally, the north node is viewd to have an influence similar to that of Jupiter and the south node has an inlfuence similar to that of Saturn.

In a chart, the north node represents the area where development of new talents should be directed. The south node represents talents already developed.

THE VERTEX

The vertex represents an important life instruction. The vertex mostly falls between the fifth and eighth houses. Its exact point varies depending on the individual's birth date, time and place. The vertex and the anti-vertex (opposite point of the vertex) indicate karmic events in the life of an individual regarding cause and effect. Be careful of what you wish for, as it just might come true when the votex and anti-vortex come into play.

THE ELEMENTS

Saturday, August 15, 2009

The Elements
The four elements: Fire, Water, Air and Earth are based on temperament, as seen in a person's primary response to situation, relationships and most things in general.

Each sign is matched with one of the elements according to whether the primary response associated with that sign is basically: to act (physical/Earth), to gain something (purposeful/Fire), to analyze (intellectual/Air), or to feel (emotional/Water).

QUALITIES OF FIRE: Active, masculine, spontaneous, quick, initiating, initializing, vitalizing and energetic.

Fire is an element with two purposes: (1) It is an expression of spiritual energy and the determination of the spirit. (2)It purifies, burns and destroys the old so that the new may emerge. It is a the element of transmutation and regeneration. To pass through fire is symbolic of transcending the human condition. The direction or cardinal point of fire is south.

QUALITIES OF WATER: Passive, feminine, receptive, sustaining, subconscious, creative and generative.

Water symbolizes the infinite realm of possibilities, which precede all form and creation. It is limitless and immortal. The direction or cardinal point of water is west.

QUALITIES OF AIR: Active, masculine, intellectual, ethereal, abstract and communicative.

Air is related to the creative breath of life, therefore, speech as well as scent and smell. Air is a volatile element which is considered the offspring of the parental elements of fire and water. It is the reconciler between the rival elements of fire (male) and water(female). Air also alludes to the human intellect and thought processes, which are quick, changeable, and abstract. The direction or cardinal point is east.

QUALITIES OF EARTH: Passive, feminine, solid, materialization, physical, stable, slow-moving and grounded.

Earth represents the physical, materialized universe in which we live. Earth is the daughter of fire and water, just as air is the son. This element encompasses all activities of productivity, fertility, growth and regeneration. Earth is the fourth element and the result of the combined actions of the other three. The direction or cardinal point of earth is north.

Step-by-Step learning

In this section you can learn, step by step, the basics of Indian Vedic astrology. Once you go through these lessons, you will know the purpose with which our ancient Rishis gave us this great science; how accurate their knowledge was and how the system operates; to what extent it is applicable and effective; what all are the things based on which a chart is analysed to give predictions; the difference between the Indian and western astrology; about the planets, signs, houses and the Nakshatras; how the houses and the Nakshatras are further sub divided; how their many fold strengths and conditions (avasthas) are analysed in the Vedic astrology to fine-tune the predictions about the nature and events in an individuals life; about the effects of various planets placed in various signs and houses. You cannot become an astrologer and start giving predictions after going through these basic lessons. But you will have a good sound idea and grasp about the basics of our astrology. After learning the basics of Vedic astrology, if you are still interested and want to learn the predictive principles and the finer points of astrology, you are welcome to the Sashtras.

The Birth Certificate!!

With the advent of the western education, slowly our own Vedic education got eradicated. In computer language, first the files were deleted, then the folders were emptied and now we are on the verge of wiping out the data banks of what was once our basic knowledge! The result is that today majority of the Indians don't know a thing about astrology, have a lot of misconceptions and blind beliefs, and when asked about their birth time they ring their mom and she consults the birth certificate!

In the Olden Days....

Thursday, August 13, 2009

Just about fifty years ago the average Indian knew [Even my father knew about the basics of astrology and he used to fix muhurtam for Travel purpose] about his correct birth date and time, his lagna, his rasi, his birth nakshatra, about the well placed and ill placed planets in his chart, about the dashas and transit effects and the remedial measures he must undertake. ( My father had recorded the correct birth time and date of his children and noted in a Book, whjch is with my elder Brother). They knew the basics of astrology and how deep and vast it is. As a result they also knew how tough the job of an astrologer is and used to have some respect for this ancient science and for its practitioners. [He used to consult the family Astrologer for marriage of his daughters etc.]
